Net price, VAT amount and gross price

VAT calculations usually move between three values: the net price before tax, the VAT amount, and the gross price after tax. If the VAT rate is r%, gross price is net price × (1 + r/100). To remove VAT from a gross amount, divide the gross price by (1 + r/100) rather than simply subtracting the percentage.

Example: adding and removing VAT

For a net price of 100 at a 20% VAT rate, VAT is 20 and the gross price is 120. If 120 is already the VAT-inclusive price, dividing 120 by 1.20 returns the original net price of 100. This distinction is important when checking invoices, quotes and marketplace prices.

VAT rates depend on jurisdiction

The calculator performs arithmetic only. Actual VAT registration rules, reduced rates, exemptions, place-of-supply rules and rounding practices vary by country and transaction type, so confirm the applicable rate with the relevant tax authority or adviser.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is VAT Calculator free to use?

Yes. The tool is available without signup or a paid account.

Does this tool work on mobile devices?

Yes. The interface is responsive and is designed to work in modern mobile and desktop browsers.

Can I use the result for official or financial decisions?

Use the result as a practical estimate. Confirm legally, financially or operationally important figures with the relevant official source, provider or professional.

How do I remove VAT from a VAT-inclusive price?

Divide the gross price by 1 plus the VAT rate expressed as a decimal. For 20% VAT, divide by 1.20.

Is subtracting 20% from a gross price the same as removing 20% VAT?

No. VAT was added to the net price, so reversing it requires division by 1.20, not subtracting 20% from the gross amount.
