Discount Calculator
Find sale price and savings after a percentage discount.
Discount formula
Savings = Original Price × Discount % ÷ 100
Sale Price = Original Price − Savings
Example
A 25% discount on $80 saves $20, so the sale price is $60.
Single discounts and stacked discounts
A single percentage discount is applied to the current price. Two sequential discounts are not normally added together because the second discount is applied to the already-reduced price. For example, 20% off followed by another 10% off is an effective 28% reduction, not 30%.
Checking the real saving
Along with the percentage, compare the actual currency amount saved and the final payable price. This is especially useful when comparing promotions that mix percentage discounts, fixed coupons and minimum-spend requirements.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate 20% off?
Multiply the original price by 0.20, then subtract that amount from the original price.
Are two 10% discounts the same as 20% off?
No. Two successive 10% discounts reduce the original price by 19% because the second 10% is taken from the already-discounted price.
How do I calculate the original price from a sale price?
Divide the sale price by the remaining percentage expressed as a decimal. For a 25% discount, the remaining percentage is 75%, or 0.75.
